As a species, we love ourselves to adorn with jewelry, makeup, hair accessories. We do now to improve our appearance, attract a mate and just because it makes us feel good about ourselves. Some forms of adornment are symbolic - like wedding rings. Or it is used to make a statement about our lifestyle, like multiple piercings and earrings.

Have you ever wondered what are the origins of these self-decoration? Is there a meaning behind it? Or do we only start to wear beads, necklaces and earrings that our awareness of increased itself and we are now?

We know that the first bits of jewelry bones, shells and other personal ornaments found in graves around 40,000 years. The idea that there is life after death, and belief in spirits good and bad, has led the way to attract good spirits and ward off evil.

Persons protected themselves from evil spirits with ornaments shaped necklaces or bracelets, and pierced themselves with the same bones and shells of such amulets on their persons at any time. At that time, people also began to paint their bodies with red ocher, which can be regarded as the first form of makeup. They also started their eyes lined with kohl to protect themselves against the force known as the "Evil Eye."

Even today, many jewelry takes the form of amulets. People wear crosses around their necks, or the Star of David, or wear a Claddagh ring - all to attract good fortune or ward off bad luck. There is even more throwbacks to the first form of magic, like a lucky rabbit's foot, lucky or a penny. Or we often less well known, more personal charms that have meaning for us alone, but are still as good luck charms and amulets.
